The mayor of a town near where missing teenager Jay Slater disappeared has suggested that he may have been seen in Tenerife watching Euros matches. Jay, 19, vanished in Tenerife 10 days ago and despite an extensive search operation involving helicopters, drones and sniffer dogs, Spanish authorities have yet to find any trace of him.

The apprentice bricklayer from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, had been enjoying a three-day music festival with his friends Lucy and Brad before leaving with two British men he met on a night out, reports the Mirror.

He returned with the men to their Airbnb in a rural area just outside Masca village and was last heard from on Monday, June 17. His friend Lucy Mae Law claims that Jay called her on the morning he went missing, saying he was disoriented, needed water, and that his phone was only one per cent charged.

However, several locals in the town of Santiago del Teide now believe they may have seen the teenager in the days following his disappearance. Mayor Emilio Jose Navarro said some locals who reported sightings of Jay have already been interviewed by police, including a few who think they may have seen Jay on the coast watching Euros matches.

Jay's family had previously released a blurry CCTV image that captured a potential sighting of Jay in the same town. The photo shows a figure strolling past a church around 6pm last Monday, approximately 7km from the Masca village where Jay was last seen,

In an earlier sighting, the Airbnb host at the property where Jay stayed before his disappearance reported seeing him walking "alone and fast" on the morning he disappeared, just outside the remote village of Masca. Mayor Navarro said: "We know the police are investigating (the CCTV images). They have asked for the town hall's security cameras and they are also working with the company that handles those cameras."

Jay's mother, Debbie Duncan, flew to Tenerife shortly after her son was declared missing and told journalists she was "beside herself with worry" and believed Jay had been abducted.

Top British detective, Mark Williams-Thomas, who worked on the Nicola Bully case and exposed former TV presenter Jimmy Savile as a prolific paedophile, has also travelled to Tenerife and joined Jay's family after promising distraught mum Debbie he could find answers "in three days".

The former police officer was spotted yesterday conducting inquiries at the holiday rental where Jay, an apprentice bricklayer, was last seen on Monday. When approached outside the property, Mr Williams-Thomas told the Mirror: "I don't want to talk in detail at the moment, but I've spent time with the family and my focus now is to build a clear timeline of the last 24 hours before Jay disappeared.

Jay's dad, Warren Slater, landed in Tenerife on Sunday and said the disappearance of his son didn't "make sense." He has been accompanied by Jay's brother Zac and family friend Rachel Hargreaves. Warren shared that they were distributing missing posters around the village of Santiago del Teide and that the police were following "every lead".
