Mitski to write songs for The Queen's Gambit stage musical

Mitski will write the music and lyrics for the musical adaptation of The Queen's Gambit.

A stage musical adaptation of the Netflix miniseries has gone into development and the My Love Mine All Mine singer has signed on to write its music and lyrics.

The production will be written by playwright Eboni Booth and directed by Whitney White.

"Before Level Forward even brought the idea of making a musical of The Queen's Gambit, I was a fan of the Netflix show, and an even greater fan of the original novel," Mitski said in a statement to Deadline. "So I was already determined to be a member of this team. And then I met Eboni and Whitney, and my determination grew tenfold!"

She continued, "I absolutely had to be a part of this! I am ecstatic to get to work with all of these amazing creatives, who've each built beautiful and unique repertoires of their own."

The Queen's Gambit novel, written by Walter Tevis, was adapted into a Netflix series starring Anya Taylor-Joy in 2020. It told the fictional story of Beth Harmon, an orphan who became a chess prodigy.

The stage adaptation will be produced by Level Forward, Lawryn LaCroix, Mara Isaacs and actress Adrienne Warren.

"The Queen's Gambit is a wholly original story about yearning for connection and finding your way in life, no matter the barriers," Booth said in her statement. "I couldn't be more thrilled to explore this world in the company of such extraordinary artists.

"Musicals are one of my first loves, and I feel so lucky to be tasked with the challenge of bringing Beth Harmon's haunting and inspiring journey to the stage."

The production's world premiere will be announced at a later date.
