“Modern Family” cast reunion leads to family drama over group chats in new ad: 'Shame!'

Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen, Eric Stonestreet, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson reunite in a new commercial about blue versus green bubbles on phones.

Modern Family might've ended in 2020, but cellular connection is the tie that binds the Dunphy-Pritchett families together — sort of — in a new commercial featuring an adorable cast reunion with the beloved ABC sitcom's stars.

Unveiled Tuesday morning by digital messaging company WhatsApp, the new ad features Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen, Eric Stonestreet, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson reprising their roles as the Emmy-winning series' central couples Phil and Claire Dunphy and Cameron Tucker and Mitchell Pritchett, respectively. All goes smoothly until Mitchell realizes the family has left him out of an important circle of communication.

Cameron kicks off the ad by asking Phil and Claire if they've seen a "precious" photo that Haley (played by Sarah Hyland on the show) sent of her twins, Poppy and George.

"Let me see!" Mitchell asks, as Phil tells him to check the photo "in the group chat." Claire shoots her husband a concerned look as they realize Mitchell isn't in the loop.

"You started a family chat without me?" Mitchell asks, pointing his finger at his family and shouting, "Shame!"

Claire tells her younger brother that the family didn't include him because of the "blurry photos" and "weird likes" they receive from him, because his phone isn't the same brand as theirs.

All is well later in the ad, as Mitchell and Cameron lay in bed together with the family fully reunited together in one group chat on the messaging platform.

"I still can't believe you cut me out," Mitchell says. Cameron responds: "We may have cut you out from here," he says, pointing to his phone before moving his hand to his chest. "Never from here!"

The cast reunion comes four months after most of the show's performers — featuring the aforementioned commercial stars, plus Ed O'Neill and Sofia Vergarareunited to present on stage at the 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Ferguson said on a subsequent episode of The Tonight Show that he personally invited Burrell to do the SAG Awards reunion to stop rumors that he'd died.

“Honestly, on that night, we were all busy,” Ferguson explained. “Sofia was supposed to be doing press, I was supposed to be here in New York, Julie was shooting a show, Ed had a glass of wine to drink. And so we all canceled those very important things, and we figured out a way to come together because the last time we had a reunion, Ty Burrell wasn’t able to come, and so we posed with a photo of Ty… and then the internet thought he was dead.”

Bowen also previously opened up about her lasting connection to her Modern Family costars, as Hyland credited her onscreen mother with helping her get through a past abusive relationship.

“I was a responsible adult that happened to be around at the right time," Bowen said on the Skinny Confidential Him & Her Podcast. "But I mean, I'm sure another responsible adult would have done the exact same thing. I just love her.”
