Molly-Mae Hague almost said no to 'Love Island' after missing out on day one cast

Molly-Mae Hague has confessed she almost declined the chance to appear on Love Island after learning that she wouldn't be part of the original cast on the first day.

Hague entered as a bombshell on day four of the 2019 series, coupling up with boxer Tommy Fury and making it all the way to the final, finishing as runner-up to Amber Gill and Greg O'Shea.

In her book Becoming Molly-Mae — reported via The Sun — she wrote that friends who had been in the villa previously had warned her that bombshells sometimes didn't make the show and remained on standby.

"They wanted me, but as a bombshell which meant that I'd be joining the villa as a late arrival to shake things up. I didn’t want to do it," Hague confessed.

She added that producers tried to persuade her to do it, telling her she would be the first bombshell to enter the villa, but she remained unsure.

"Things were going well for me business-wise: my Instagram was growing rapidly and organically. I knew that I could go on the show and potentially damage that," Hague said.

"If you say something wrong, you could ruin your reputation. So, it was a lot to think about.

"A lot of people were saying to me, You don't really need it. You can do this without it. I listened to all that ... and decided that I'd do it anyway."

Hague has become one of the most successful contestants in the history of Love Island since leaving the villa, becoming one of the biggest names in the influencer world.

In 2021, she landed a major role in the fashion industry as the new creative director of PrettyLittleThing.

Hague has since attempted to distance herself from Love Island and said last year that while the show "pushed me in the right direction", she would have achieved her goals regardless.

She said: "The things that I've achieved since coming out of that show aren't really down to the show. They're more down to my drive and ambition to do big things."
