Nerve-racking footage captures the moment a cyclist had a near miss with a bus on a city centre street at rush hour.

The incident happened at around 4.30pm on Friday (June 28) as the two vehicles made their way northwards on North Bridge. The popular route through the city centre was busy with vehicles and pedestrians at the time.

Footage shows the cyclist, towing a trailer, approach the traffic lights outside the Balmoral Hotel at the foot of North Bridge. He passes two queues of vehicles including cars and a tour bus waiting at a red light.

Bollards funnelling traffic through the ongoing works on North Bridge are also visible either side of the stationary vehicles. Multiple pedestrians, meanwhile, cross in front.

Closest to the cyclist is a bus waiting at the front of the queue indicating to turn right. As the cyclist approaches, the lights change to green and he attempts to cross the junction in the direction of Waterloo Place and Leith Street.

The bus driver begins to pull away before performing a hasty braking manoeuvre - stopping just inches away from the bike which also slows. Happily, the vehicles avoid contact and are able to go on their way.
