The moment singers perform on Birmingham street as GMB presenter says 'bloomin love this'

This is the moment a group of barbershop singers break out into an impromptu song while huddled on the edge of a busy Birmingham street. The joyous footage, taken in Kings Heath at the weekend, has gone viral and even caught the eye of an ITV Good Morning Britain news presenter.

Local Tom Carroll took the footage of the four singers outside Schooners cafe in York Road. They brought smiles while singing Barbershop polecat 'Hello Mary-Lou', which was once covered by Queen frontman Freddie Mercury.

Sharing it on X, Good Morning Britain news presenter Marverine Cole was quick to respond adding "Bloomin love this".

Tom commented: "Kings Heath, didn’t expect a Barbershop Quartet. Never change. Really impressed, cheered us all up massively."

"Kings Heath own Four Freshmen," said The Village, calling the performance "brilliant."

One of the singers - David Eden-Sangwell from Kings Norton - was stunned to see himself being shared online as the post went viral.

David explained that it was the first public performance for him and his friends, who have formed a new Barbershop Quartet called 404 and were rehearsing for the first time outside ahead of a national competition.

David can be seen in the video above with Guy William from Kings Heath, Victor Wong from Kings Norton and David Morris from Stourbridge.

He said: "We are heading to Harrogate for a Barbershop Convention during May Bank Holiday against 1,500 other people so we wanted to practise outside and get experience singing in front of people.

"For our first public-ish performance, we got a great reaction. We kept moving along Kings Heath's shopping street as we're always conscious about not inflicting barbershop songs on people and don't want to annoy anyone.

"We got a lot of clapping and it felt really good to later see a video of us being shared online and such lovely comments."

David has been singing barbershop songs for 15 years and is part of West Midlands group Anvil Chorus with Victor and Guy. The Barbershop Harmony Club meets at Beacon Church in Pheasey, Sutton Coldfield.

They have now joined with David Morris, who sings with Telfordaires singing group in Shropshire, for the forthcoming contest.

There will be other chances to catch the singers out and about across the city as they are planning a trip to sing in Birmingham city centre in coming weeks too.

David added that Anvil Chorus welcomes newcomers to have a go at singing barbershop. "It keeps people active, happy and is very sociable," he said.
