We’ve all been there - a huge row breaks out amid a heated game of Monopoly but that could be a thing of the past.

Hasbro has revealed a set which includes a top hat-shaped smart speaker and a voice-activated assistant which will make cheating at the game almost impossible.

The games manufacturer said: “Talk to Mr Monopoly and he responds

“Press your token’s button and say, ‘Buy St James Place’ and Mr Monopoly will track the transaction, keeping the game moving.”

The new ‘cashless’ version is the latest effort to bring the game up to date and the digital assistant will take care of the transactions so your opponents can’t stiff you.

Hasbro promises that Mr Monopoly will have a “personality”. The range of his conversational abilities is not yet clear, although it is understood that he will have the wherewithal to announce “You’re bankrupt!” and “Go to jail!”

The game was first published in 1935 and has spawned numerous versions including the Simpsons, Star Wars and localised boards, alongside a number of electronic versions for consoles and PC.

However, the latest version will be without banknotes but it’s not the first time - Hasbro previously introduced a version which featured ‘contactless payment’ as a nod to the growing tend to tap and go.

The Times reports new edition also caters for the shorter attention spans of the information age, allowing for a maximum of four players instead of six and offering fewer properties to speed things up.

The £30 Voice Banking edition will be available from August.
