More than 1,500 wanted North East suspects have been arrested within the last six months.

The arrests were made as Northumbria Police continues a crackdown on evasive fugitives who are wanted in connection with a range of offences across the region. Since the beginning of this year, a total of 1,598 wanted suspects have been taken into police custody – equating to more than nine top targets being arrested each day.

The activity continued this week as the force marks National Response Policing Week, with front-line officers supported by their neighbourhood colleagues as well as the Roads Policing Unit, Firearms Support Unit and CID. Many of those arrested since the turn of the year are now answering a range of charges in court.

Detective Chief Superintendent Craig Metcalfe, head of Crime at Northumbria Police, welcomed the activity and reiterated there is no hiding place for suspects trying to evade arrest. He said: "These figures highlight just how proactive our officers continue to be in the daily pursuit of wanted suspects.

“Every single day, we have teams of officers out in our communities searching for those individuals who we want to speak to as part of our active investigations. This work will not stop – and our message to those involved in criminality across Northumbria is a simple one. There is no hiding place, you will be caught, and you will be brought to justice.

“As ever, I’d like to thank all our officers, staff and volunteers who play their part in protecting our communities, as well as the public for their continued support as our eyes and ears in the areas they know best. By working together, we can continue to pursue perpetrators and ensure our region remains a safe one to live, work and visit.”
