More heavy rain is forecast this weekend in Greater Manchester - amid a 'sad, very showery' weather picture across the UK.

Some parts of the UK will be hit by thundery showers today (Friday) after a chilly and wet start to the summer. Met Office forecasters predict the weather will remain gloomy over the weekend, after the UK experienced its coolest first 10 days of June since 2020 due to the jet stream dragging unsettled weather across the UK.

Dan Stroud, a spokesperson for the Met Office, said: "It’s a sad, very showery picture really." In Greater Manchester, heavy showers are forecast from around 9am this morning, with the rain expected to fall on-and-off through the afternoon and into the evening.

The downpours will come amid a mix of cloudy weather with brief sunny spells, but forecasters predict the picture today will be largely wet and rainy. Temperatures will reach highs of around 15C this afternoon.

More rain showers are forecast on Saturday, which is set to be another unsettled day in our region. Some of the downpours tomorrow are expected to be heavy amid cloudy spells.

It will also feel slightly cooler tomorrow as the mercury is not expected to rise above 13C. Lighter showers are forecast on Sunday amid some sunny and cloudy spells.

Mr Stroud said the UK has been experiencing chilly and wet weather recently due to the jet stream, a ribbon of high velocity wind in the atmosphere which dictates how the weather flows across the country, 'dragging the weather down from the north'. He said: "The jet stream has been helping to pull a lot of unsettled weather southwards across the country.

"We’ve had wind persistently from the north, which is quite a cold direction whatever time of year it is. It’s allowed temperatures to be a good few degrees below where they should be for the time of year."

Rainfall this summer has so far been 'above average', the Met Office spokesperson added. “In much of England and Wales, rainfall has been above average. We’ve had between 125 and 150 per cent of the long-term average of the first five months.”
