Noah and Olivia were still the most popular names for newborn babies in England and Wales in the latest figures. Both have been at the top of their respective lists for some time.

According to the statistics, Noah and Olivia have been so popular over recent years, they even crossed over to be used for the opposite sexes. From 2015 to 2022, the statistics suggest 69 baby girls were called Noah. Meanwhile, in 2008, there were three lucky boys who were given the name Olivia.

There were a total of 3,289 baby girls given the name Olivia in 2022, according to new figures released by the Office for National Statistics.

That makes it the most popular name for newborn girls for the seventh year running. Amelia was the next most popular name, with 2,884 newborns.

That’s followed by Isla with 2,613, Ava with 2,293, and Lily with 2,281. Old-fashioned names make up the majority of the girls' top 10, with others including Ivy, Freya and Florence.

Noah is the most popular name for newborn boys, with 4,586 babies receiving that name in 2022. It’s the second year in a row that Noah has held the top spot in the baby name charts.

Muhammad has moved up to second place from fifth, with 4,177 baby boys being given the name in 2022. However, the combined number of babies called either Muhammed, Mohammed or Mohammad in 2022 was 6,715.

Among the boys, George is third on the 2022 list with 3,699 babies, followed by Oliver with 3,691, and Leo with 3,610.

A closer look at the figures show that Noah is the top boy’s name in four regions of the country - the North East, the East Midlands, the East of England, and Wales.

Muhammad, meanwhile, is top in the North West, Yorkshire and the Humber, the West Midlands, and London. George tops the list in the South East, while in the South West it’s Arthur.

Olivia is the top girl’s name in every region of the country except London where it’s Amelia. Amelia is second in every region outside London apart from the South East and Wales, where Isla is number one, and the South West, where Florence dominates.
