Most popular baby names in Northern Ireland for 2023 revealed

The most popular baby names given to children in Northern Ireland have been revealed for 2023.

The official list was released on Tuesday, April 16 by the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) with the annual data looking at the naming trends in the past year.

In 2023, the top baby name for a girl was Isla and the top baby name for a boy was Noah - taking over from Grace and James in 2022.

Noah took the top spot for boys after being in the top three since 2019 and Isla overtook Grace which had previously held the top spot for the last five years while also appearing in the top three for 17 consecutive years.

The top ten boys' names in Northern Ireland for 2023 are:

1. Noah - 152 babies

2. Jack - 146 babies

3. James - 131 babies

4. Cillian - 128 babies

5. Charlie - 123 babies

6. Leo - 119 babies

7. Oisin - 116 babies

8. Oliver - 114 babies

9. Luca - 108 babies

10. Theo - 108 babies

The top ten girls' names in Northern Ireland for 2023 are:

1. Isla - 147 babies

2. Fiadh - 138 babies

3. Grace - 137 babies

4. Emily - 136 babies

5. Olivia - 126 babies

6. Lily - 108 babies

7. Ella - 97 babies

8. Aoife - 94 babies

9. Amelia - 92 babies

10. Freya - 90 babies

Names that made it into the top ten from 2022 to 2023 were Leo, Luca, Amelia and Ella seeing Harry and Thomas fall from the top ten boys' names and Annie and Evie fall from the top ten girls' names.

The biggest climbers across the entire list in 2023 included Leon, Donnacha, Albie and Seth for boys and Rebecca, Rhea, Aurora and Raya for girls.
