Dec. 26—The Most Read Story of 2023 at Itemonline.com was the story about a house party gone wrong.

Huntsville Police Department (HPD) had their hands full with multiple victims shot and some with life-threatening injuries.

The shooting occurred at 12:38 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, near the corner of 19th Street and Avenue O. HPD responded to the shooting at a large house party with multiple victims in need of lifesaving measures.

Multiple agencies responded, including Walker County EMS, Texas Department of Public Safety troopers, Sam Houston State University police officers and deputies from the Walker County Sheriff's Office.

Four victims were located at the scene and transported to area hospitals.

Cruz Garcia, 18, of Livingston, TX, died Sunday morning at Herman Memorial Hospital in Houston. James Jones, 18, of Huntsville, died later that morning from injuries he sustained during the same incident.

Two suspects were arrested on charges related to the shooting. Joe Allen Lewis, 22, and Lynn Johnson, 19, both of Livingston, were taken into custody at the Huntsville Police Department Saturday afternoon.

Lewis was charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, a second-degree felony, while Johnson was charged with Assault, a class A misdemeanor. Detectives anticipate pursuing further charges as the investigation continues.

Lewis was booked on a $50,000 bond that was increased to $125,000. He has since posted bond and released on March 10.

Johnson was originally booked on a $250,000 bond. Those charges were reduced and his bond was lowered to $2,000 and he was released on Feb. 10.

The investigation is ongoing, and the Huntsville Police Department strongly urges anyone with information to contact Sgt. John Thompson at 936-291-5427.

Detectives are particularly interested in speaking to anyone who attended the party that can provide any information.

Lewis later received a No Bill from the courts.
