A mother has warned parents about putting their children in shopping trolley seats after her baby contracted salmonella and meningitis.

Mother-of-five Vivienne Wardrop, 35, from the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia, said her ten-month-old son Logan (pictured above) fell ill nearly 24 hours after visiting a shop in Helensvale on September 13.

He started vomiting and suffered severe diarrhoea, which was so bad that at one point he started passing blood.

She wrote on Facebook: “Just wanted to warn parents against using baby seats in trolley without wiping down or using a blanket.

“Didn’t even think about it just popped him in and did a quick shop. I hadn’t been anywhere with him in a week so doctors advised only place he could of gotten it.

“My 10-month-old woke up the next morning so sick. Took him to hospital and he ended up in intensive care for eight days.

“He ended up catching adenovirus, rotavirus, salmonella poisoning and got meningitis because of the strain on his body.”

Logan spent a total of ten days in hospital but is now back at home recovering from his ordeal.

When she noticed her son had severe diarrhoea, Ms Wardrop took him to the doctor, who advised her it was a virus.

However, the next day, he had become so dehydrated that she brought him to Gold Coast University Hospital.

He was later diagnosed with adenovirus, rotavirus, salmonella and meningitis.

“We were scared we were going to lose,” Ms Wardrop told Daily Mail Australia.

“I’d never seen a child this sick, I have five children. He lost 10 per cent of body weight in three days - 800g - and went to being bloated because the water wouldn’t go into the cells – it was terrifying.”

She said she had narrowed the cause of his illness down to the shopping trolley because Logan had only eaten his formula and water that week and hadn’t been out of the house.

However, she said she didn’t blame the supermarket, but merely wanted to raise awareness about trolley hygiene.
