BBC Two's political thriller MotherFatherSon came to an end on Wednesday night (April 24), after eight sometimes confusing episodes that were helped along by the series' terrific cast.

The drama has featured some shocking moments for viewers, including a very unsettling sex scene and a gruesome moment in which Caden (played by Billy Howle) tried to rip off his own scalp.

MotherFatherSon followed Richard Gere as media mogul Max and Helen McCrory as his ex-wife Kathryn, who are reunited after their son, newspaper editor Caden, spirals out of control.

There's also an election going on, with right-wing candidate Angela Howard (Sarah Lancashire) up against the country's first Muslim Prime Minister Jahan Zakari (Danny Sapani).

In the previous episode, Kathryn had been offered Caden's job by Max, but had decided to turn it down.

However, in the finale, she had a change of heart and agreed to take the job for five years, the length of the next Prime Minister's term.

After Max and Kathryn appeared to reach a truce, Max left the country just before it was revealed that Angela had won the election.

We then saw Kathryn visit Angela to warn her that she would be watching her during her time in office and later she received a document which appeared to contain some potentially damning information about the new Prime Minister.

As for Max, he went to Mexico to be with his wife Sofia for the birth of their child. The closing scene showed Max holding the baby on a balcony as he looked out over the city.

When the episode ended, many viewers took to Twitter to praise the cast's performances – though some were still left confused by what they'd just watched.

While it's not known if the drama, which was written by Tom Rob Smith will return for a second series, some of the events of the finale would certainly make you believe there's more of the story to be told.

MotherFatherSon continues airs on BBC Two.
