A tea of one's own: the Virginia Woolf-inspired tea comes to London this Wednesday: Dalloway Terrace

A Mrs Dalloway-themed afternoon tea is coming to Dalloway Terrace at the Bloomsbury Hotel - and you don't have to pour the tea yourself.

The event marks Dalloway Day, an annual celebration of one of Virginia's Woolf's most famous novels, Mrs Dalloway. The modernist classic is set entirely on a 'Wednesday in mid June', and follows a day in the life of Clarissa Dalloway, an upper class class housewife who is in the midst of preparing for an important dinner party.

For those who don't associate themselves with the highbrow literary crowd, this short read basically cemented Woolf's reputation as one of the most important novelists, theorists and critics of her generation. She's unquestionably, a very big deal.

To give Woolf the tea of her own she so rightly deserves, Head Chef Chris Dodd has created the 'Mrs Dalloway tea'.

Inspired by the recipes of Jans Ondaatje Rolls’ book ‘The Bloomsbury Cookbook’, expect everything from plain and fruit scones, clotted cream, and summer cherry and almond tarts. They've also managed to squeeze in appearance of 'Leonard's banana fruit loaf', the dish personally prepared and made for Woolf's husband Leonard every year, by his mother on his birthday. And of course, there will be lots and lots of tea.

The jolly experience will set you back 35 smackers per person, and will be available from June 18 – 24 from 12 noon to 4pm daily.

Whilst no longer available for comment, we're sure Woolf would find the following cake and party-related quote from her short story collection Monday or Tuesday quite apt: "I want to dance, laugh, eat pink cakes, yellow cakes, drink thin, sharp wine.'

And so we will in your honour Virginia.

‘Mrs. Dalloway’s Afternoon Tea’ is at Dalloway Terrace, 16-22 Great Russell St, Fitzrovia, London WC1B 3NN from June 18 – 24 from 12 noon to 4pm daily.
