A mother faces a murder charge after her two-year-old son was brutally beaten to death in an attack sparked by a potty-training incident.

Toddler Kylen Shangreaux suffered serious injuries including being bitten and having his scrotum torn in the vicious attack.

A post-mortem showed the toddler was killed as a result of blows to the head and abdomen.

Kylen’s mother, Katrina Shangreaux, 28, faces a first-degree murder charge.

Grandmother Sonya Dubray, 47, faces charges of tampering with evidence, accessory to first-degree murder and making a false statement.

The attack happened after an incident while Kylen was being potty-trained at his grandmother’s home in Porcupine, South Dakota, in the U.S. on an Indian Reservation, say prosecutors.

‘Potty training was the catalyst for the child abuse and (Dubray) knew the statement and representation was false.’ said papers filed in court.

The incident happened in July.

FBI agents say Kylen was punched in the head and stomach.

Katrina and Dubray have been remanded in the same prison.

A Facebook page has been set up - ‘Justice for Kylen’ - by other family members and supporters, arguing for a change in the law to protect vulnerable young children.

Kylen’s father, James Shangreaux Sr, is also in jail reported the New York Daily News, accused of murdering the youngster’s one-year-old half-brother.

If convicted, Kylen’s parents could spend the rest of their lives in jail and his grandmother could be sentenced to 40 years.
