Mum's shock after daughter suddenly dies at home - with her twin, 10, now in hospital

A mum has spoken of her shock after her 10-year-old daughter died suddenly at the family home - with her twin sister having since been admitted to hospital.

Shaylisha Morrison died on May 30 after suffering from sickness and diarrhoea for a few days.

Her mum, Debbie, said that Shaylisha and her twin Chardonnay have both suffered from bowel problems since birth, and she believes that these issues are linked to Shaylisha’s death.

On the day she died, she had been on the sofa resting at home in Ainsworth, however, when her father Eddie checked on her later on, he found that she was unresponsive.

Paramedics were called but were unable to save Shaylisha and she was taken to Royal Bolton Hospital.

Debbie said: “They both suffered with constipation since birth. We kept telling the authorities and professionals that something wasn’t right.

“But all they kept telling us was this is normal for premature babies and to just keep giving them plenty of water and fruit and veg. This has been going on for 10 years.

“No one has listened to us, and it’s taken for one of my daughters to pass away and for her twin sister to end up in hospital with exactly the same thing.”

An initial post-mortem examination has taken place, but no cause of death was determined from this.

Four days after Shaylisha died, Chardonnay was admitted to hospital with bowel problems and the same symptoms Shaylisha had.

Chardonnay is currently doing well and is on medication, but remains in hospital.

Speaking about the girls’ bond, Debbie said: “They were both inseparable, they were best friends and did everything together, went to Elton Primary School together and played games together.

“They were both happy, bubbly girls, always smiling and there was never a dull moment, they were just always happy.”

Debbie has urged anyone with children who may have bowel issues to get them checked out as soon as possible.

She added: “Me and my husband put our faith in the health visitors, school nurses and the GPs as they are the professionals.

“No one ever said that they would refer them to the hospital for scans or x-rays which should have been done.

“Maybe this could have been dealt with years ago and this horrendous ordeal would have been prevented.”

Shaylisha’s funeral will take place on June 28 at 10am at Bury Cemetery and the family has set up a Go Fund Me to help with funeral costs.

The inquest of Shaylisha opened at Rochdale Coroner’s Court and police coroner’s officer Paul Lever confirmed that she had been ill and was suffering from sickness on the day of her death and that her father found her dead on the sofa at home on the evening of May 30.

Coroner Catherine McKenna set a review date for September 30.
