Mustapha Bundu fit to play for Sierra Leone in World Cup qualifiers

Plymouth Argyle attacker Mustapha Bundu is part of the Sierra Leone squad for their latest two 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Bundu suffered an injury in the Pilgrims' season-ending 1-0 victory over Hull City at Home Park on May 4 and had to be substituted but he recovered from that in time to be one of 24 players selected by Sierra Leone head coach Amidu Karim. Sierra Leone are 'at home' to Djibouti in El Jadida, Morroco, tomorrow (Wednesday, June 5) and will then play away to Burkina Faso, also on neutral territory in Mali, on Monday, June 10.

Bundu made the last of his 14 international appearances for the Leone Stars in June 2023, when he scored in a 3-2 defeat by Nigeria in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

The 27-year-old joined Argyle from Belgian club Anderlecht on a two-year contract when the summer transfer window closed. He went on to make nine starts and 19 substitute appearances and scored three goals during an injury-disrupted first season at Home Park.

Sierra Leone played their first two games in Group A of African qualification for the 2026 World Cup last November, at a time when Bundu was ruled out by a hamstring strain. They drew 0-0 with Ethiopia and lost 2-0 to Egypt.

Egypt are currently top of the group with six points from two matches, followed by Burkina Faso and Guinea-Bissau on four, with Sierra Leone and Ethiopia on one, while Djibouti are bottom after losing both of their games and following to score in either.

Meanwhile, Argyle goalkeeper Conor Hazard is in the Northern Ireland squad for two friendly internationals to be played in Spain.

Northern Ireland will take on Spain at the Son Moix Stadium in Palma de Mallorca on Saturday, June 8, before meeting Andorra in Murcia next Tuesday (June 11).

Hazard is one of three goalkeepers selected by Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill, along with Bailey Peacock Farrell and Pierce Charles, an 18-year-old from Sheffield Wednesday who has been called up at senior level for the first time.

Peacock-Farrell is usually Northern Ireland's first choice 'keeper so is expected to start against Spain, but he was injured for a time last season and that led to Hazard playing four times for his country, taking his total of appearances to eight.
