'Mysterious' Note Uncovered in Historic Castle from Potential 'Secret Agent': 'Don't Tell Anybody'

A note written in 1966, which notably mentioned James Bond, has been discovered in a castle off the coast of France

A peculiar note discovered in a bottle inside a historic castle might sound like a mission meant for a beloved fictional spy. But, in the case of a certain decades-old piece of paper uncovered in Elizabeth Castle in Jersey, that fictional character is very much already involved in this mystery.

Earlier this week, Jersey Heritage revealed that it discovered a "mysterious" note featuring the name James Bond in the 16th century castle off the coast of France.

Sharing the news to Instagram, the organization revealed that the paper was spotted on the first floor of the castle's Officers’ Quarters, when "a fireplace was unblocked" amid a restoration project.

Hidden in the structure was a glass bottle, which included both the note and an additional three pages of the a weekly Reveille newspaper from the '60s, per the BBC.

The note reads the following: “007 JAMES BOND / 26th Feb 1966. / P.S. SECRET AGENT. / DON’T TELL ANYBODY."

It was signed on the back by someone named E A Blampied, who "might have been a well known Jersey artist, Edmund Blampied," historic buildings officer Harvey Doolan told the BBC.

According to Art UK, the artist was known for his works in oil, water color and wash, and was a "noted etcher, with a fine, swirling line," who has work featured in multiple British and foreign art collections.

Alongside the note itself were pages 15 to 18 of the local newspaper from Feb. 23, 1966.

"The note was discovered during work in the Officers’ Quarters as part of Phase One of our restoration project at the Castle, which also involves the Victorian Military Hospital. The work is monitored by our Archaeology team to minimise, where possible, damage to the historic fabric of the buildings," Jersey Heritage wrote on Instagram.

"However, we have no further information about the Blampied note! If you can help us to get to the bottom of this mystery, please DM us."

As Doolan told the BBC, the items were "quite an eclectic mix to find" and were written by someone who was "clearly a very big James Bond fan." But there is a chance that the spy lover — or spy — wasn't the Blampied some think they may be.

"He was 79-years-old at that point in time, and he passed away in the August of that year so we thought it was possibly unlikely that he was shoving bottles into fireplaces at Elizabeth Castle," Doolan added.

Doolan noted that the bottle would have been hidden in the fireplace during a restoration project by the public's work committee, and that the fireplace in question was likely the last to be blocked.

"All the others had been blocked between probably 1923 and 1946 as we found cigarette packets from the period and German ammunition," he said.

Jersey Heritage, which oversees the historic sites and archives of Jersey, also shared a few additional photos of the "mysterious" discovery and its odd location. The note could be seen surrounded by concrete and stone, inside the otherwise standard fireplace — perhaps a mystery meant for the best of spies.

"Unfortunately, the glass was damaged but the note would have been a message in a bottle," Jersey Heritage shared to X, formerly Twitter.
