Warning: This article contains potential spoilers for The Walking Dead season eight.

With Rosita and Michonne both reported to be absent for parts of the first half of The Walking Dead season eight, there are murmurings that current Big Bad character Negan himself might also not be around that much.

He may be the main antagonist, but Jeffrey Dean Morgan has apparently not been spotted on set since episode one (the series is shooting its fifth episode of the season right now).

This has led to some fans speculating that he will be missing for episodes two to five.

Throw into the mix that Dwayne Johnson's upcoming movie Rampage is shooting – Morgan has a role in that, alongside the likes of Naomie Harris, Malin Akerman and Joe Manginiello.

However, we would cool any speculation that Negan will be absent for that entire length of time. For starters, he is a huge character, and the point of the All-Out War arc is to see Rick Grimes pitted against the Saviors leader.

Nobody knows how large Morgan's role in Rampage actually is. It could be a minor one-week part which the producers could easily accommodate. It could be meatier than that.

But perhaps the biggest reason why it's a bit premature to jump to conclusions right now comes from the source material itself – comics spoilers below.

At the start of the All-Out War arc, Rick marches his militia (made up of Alexandrians, Hilltopians and Kingdomites) to the Sanctuary to confront Negan head-on. Rick lures a herd of walkers to Negan's base as the undead swarm the place, trapping Negan and his people inside.

If the TV show follows this storyline, it means that by the end of episode one Negan will have retreated inside the Sanctuary.

Any scenes filming Negan and the Saviors' fight for survival from the walkers would happen on a closed-off set, as it would take place entirely indoors – which would easily explain why Morgan may not have been spotted on location.

This is all speculation on our part, of course. But we expect the larger-than-life villain to be a prominent part of season eight.

The Walking Dead airs on AMC in the US and on FOX in the UK.
