Former Neighbours star Alan Dale has opened up about returning to the show after 25 years.

Dale played Jim Robinson from 1985 to 1993, leaving after a dispute with producers regarding pay. The actor has discussed his exit several times in interviews, so the recent announcement that he would be reprising his role for Christmas was perhaps a little unexpected (but also exciting).

Speaking to TV Week, he explained why he decided to return as Jim – likely as part of a dream or flashback sequence – for the Christmas Day episode.

"I don't want to ruin the story, you'll have to wait and see," he said. "I just wanted to finish the circle and put all that [unhappiness behind the original exit] behind me."

Dale added that he enjoyed being back on the Neighbours set.

"A lot of the crew were the same people I worked with back in the day," he shared. "It was fun to catch up with them."

Jim's original exit saw the character suffering a fatal heart attack, as Annalise Hartman's mother Fiona got closer to him because of his wealth.

Neighbours airs on Channel 5 at 12.45pm and 6pm as part of its seasonal timeslot change.
