Neighbours legend Ryan Moloney, who has portrayed the beloved Toadie for three decades, has announced he is stepping down from the role.

The soap legend, known for his character in the recently relaunched Amazon Freevee show, stated that he would be leaving. But he did hint at a possible return reminiscent of Harold Bishop's recurring appearances.

He said: "After 30 years playing Toadie, I will be leaving Ramsay Street. I can't tell you what is happening to the character maybe I could be the next Jim Robinson, The Mirror reports.

"Or maybe I'll be the next Harold Bishop and keep popping back over the years. Although I won't be bringing you our fantastic storylines from in front of the camera, I will be bringing them to you from the other side, behind the camera. I've just started director training and have just finished filming my first episode as director so I really hope that you enjoy that."

In speaking with The Mirror previously, Moloney revealed his strategy for remaining relevant on the show. He said: "I worked out in the very early days that the main reason people were given for being fired, nine times out of ten, was: 'We just don't see any more kind of story arc for your character'."

He added: "So roughly three or four months before the end of my contract I would go to the story team and dump like 15 or 20 story ideas on their desk so they never run out of ideas for me."

"Apparently there was [a day when they'd had enough of Toadie] - I had someone tell me, 'We had a see-you-later storyline for you but you did such a good job we decided to keep you on'."

Touching on Neighbours finding a new home on Amazon Freeve and teaming up with Ring, Ryan said: "It's quite nice that I have become so well known that Amazon wants to use me as their first Australian person to do the Amazon Ring voices with Quick Replies, but I've only ever ever treated my contracts as the contract, so when they're up, that's when I'm out of work as far as I'm concerned."
