Neighbours has written character David Tanaka out of upcoming scenes because of a health scare for actor Takaya Honda.

Honda shared a "hospital headshot" on Instagram earlier on Wednesday (February 20) showing a severely swollen eye to let fans know that he'd developed an infection.

"Thanks to everyone who has sent me their well wishes," he wrote to his followers. "I am being treated very well by the doctors and nurses here at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and hopefully everything is all good soon and I can go home tomorrow."

Takaya went on to describe the rapidly spiralling infection that had led to his hospitalisation over the previous 24 hours.

"Just to catch you up, I have a bad eye infection that I likely got from someone at fair day on the weekend that went from bad to worse across 24 hours," he explained. "I saw the GP yesterday and was given antibiotic tablets and eye drops. Throughout the day my eye got more and more swollen and by this morning my eye had basically closed over.

"I went back to the GP who sent me to hospital and I have been here since then having antibiotics delivered straight into my bloodstream. As you can see it is still quite swollen but much better than this morning which you would have seen in my story.

"Again thank you for all the well wishes, and if you notice David feels like he is missing from some @neighbours scenes in 3 months you will know why."

Many fans sent Takaya positive thoughts, and expressed hopes of seeing his character David back filming in Erinsborough before long. The actor has been a mainstay of the soap since 2016.

Neighbours continues on Channel 5 in the UK and on 10 Peach in Australia.
