Yahoo News Netflix's Dark Crystal cast includes Mark Hamill and more
Netflix are bringing back Jim Henson's classic '80s movie The Dark Crystal for a brand new series, and they have lined up a whole host of stars from all our science-fiction and fantasy favourites.
Titled The Dark Crystal: The Age of Resistance, this prequel series sees the world of Thra and the Crystal of Truth being corrupted by the powers of the Skeksis.
Led by Kingsman and Robin Hood star Taron Egerton, the show will follow the Gelfling Rian, who, along with his friends Brea (The Witch's Anya Taylor-Joy) and Deet (Game of Thrones' Nathalie Emmanuel), discovers the secret of the Skeksis and begin a rebellion to take back their planet.
Other Gelfling characters will be voiced by Harry Potter's Helena Bonham-Carter, Game of Thrones' Natalie Dormer, Divergent's Theo Jones, Sherlock's Toby Jones, Star Trek: Discovery's Shazad Latif, Black Mirror's Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Grimsby's Mark Strong, Tomb Raider's Alicia Vikander, Outlander's Catriona Balfe, Maleficent 2's Harris Dickinson and comedian Eddie Izzard.
Voice actors for the Skeksis and Mystics include Star Wars and DC Animated Universe icon Mark Hamill, more Star Trek: Discovery and Game of Thrones stars in Jason Isaacs and Ralph Ineson, respectively, Brooklyn Nine-Nine's Andy Samberg, Hot Fuzz's Simon Pegg, Key and Peele's Keegan-Michael Key and True Detective's Ólafur Darri Ólafsson.
And finally, the mysterious entity Aughra will be voiced by The Happytime Murders' Donna Kimball.
Further characters will be voiced by their puppeteers, while even more casting will be announced soon.
Speaking of the adaptation, Netflix's VP of Original Series, Cindy Holland, said: "We knew we had to entice some incredible voice talent to add dimension to the exquisite artistry of the puppeteers who bring the characters to life.
"I am proud to say that this may be one of the finest casts assembled from the world’s favourite TV shows and movies."
Meanwhile, Lisa Henson, the CEO of The Jim Henson Company and the legendary puppeteer's daughter, stated that: "It is humbling to see so many truly gifted actors join The Dark Crystal universe by adding their voices to Age of Resistance.
"As with the original film, we are now adding a voice cast of the highest calibre that will provide textures and range to the puppetry performances that are the heart of the series.
"It is thrilling to see this assembled team of artists, puppeteers and now voice actors, many inspired by my father’s original film, work together to realise this unique world – through performance and craft – at a scale that is rarely seen today."
The Dark Crystal: The Age of Resistance will launch on Netflix in 2019.
