Say what you like about Joel Edgerton, but you can't say the man doesn't have versatility as an actor.

Some of Edgerton's most recent roles include a crime-fighting orc and a CIA agent, so of course the only natural progression is for him to move on to Shakespeare.

Now, The Wrap is reporting that Edgerton has been cast in Netflix's upcoming adaptation of William Shakespeare's history plays Henry IV and Henry V, The King.

Edgerton, who will star opposite man of the moment Timothée Chalamet, will play the buffoonish knight Falstaff, a staple Shakespearean character who appeared in five plays in total.

Chalamet – recently Oscar nominated, of course, for Call Me By Your Name – will play Falstaff's slightly more noble companion Prince Hal, who is later crowned King Henry V.

Here's hoping that Edgerton's latest Netflix project fares a little better than Bright then, eh...

Despite getting savaged by critics, Joel has spoken out in defence of Bright, arguing that the movie was always going to be one for the fans.

"I think there was a little bit of extra critical hate towards it because it's changing the landscape of the movie business," he explained.

"I think Bright is maybe a movie that needs to be reviewed by public opinion rather than viewed through the highbrow prism of film criticism."

Somehow we don't think Netflix was all that bothered by the "highbrow prism of film criticism"– Bright swiftly landed itself a sequel, after ratings company Nielsen estimated it drew in an average audience of 11 million in three days.

Bright is available to watch on Netflix right now.
