Netflix's latest shark thriller has caused a stir among fans of the genre - for all the right reasons.

Under Paris has been hailed as 'one of the best' shark films ever made by fans and critics alike. The film debuted on Rotten Tomatoes with a critics score of 100 percent, which has since been brought down to 69 per cent across 13 reviews.

It follows an environmental activist who discovers that a killer shark is lurking in the river Seine. The finding is made just days before the World Triathlon Championships are hosted in Paris. A former researcher, whose colleagues were all killed by the shark, must step up to prevent a bloodbath from unfolding.

The French language film drops just weeks before the 2024 Olympics take place in the French capital in real life on July 26. Budapest's Xavier Gens directs, with Bérénice Bejo, Léa Léviant, Nassim Lyes and Anaïs Parello leading the cast.

Many have praised the film for its 'grim yet captivating' ending which one viewer described as 'one of my favourite movie moments of the year.' Taking to X, formerly Twitter, @MrDrewy said: "Under Paris has absolutely no right to be as good as it is... The catacombs scene, my god, 10/10 anxiety inducing horror" as @gdimelow agreed: "Honestly can’t remember the last time I enjoyed a Netflix original this much. Fun, slightly preposterous scenario, solid performances, ecological concerns and some genuinely awesome effects work. #UnderParis".

@chadiscollins declared: "‘Under Paris’ goes for broke in its final fifteen minutes and it’ll undoubtedly be one of my favourite movie moments of the year" as @DerekBrocks reckoned: "Xavier Gens' "Under Paris" is one of the most brutally nihilistic, engrossing and genuinely terrifying shark movies made in the last few years, the BALLS Gens had to go for a third act and an ending like that is nothing short of awe-inspiring, just so grim yet captivating".

Meanwhile The Guardian's Stuart Heritage said Netflix has delivered 'one of the best shark movies ever made' describing it as an 'improbable yet genuinely entertaining summer thriller that deserves its place near the top of a hit-and-miss subgenre'. Variety's Michael Nordine branded it a shark movie 'worthy of swimming in the wake of Jaws'.

Under Paris is available to stream now.
