Netflix: Making Friday Better

IT’S HERE. Friday is here and that Friday feeling is weighing on me heavier than a winter coat in the desert. Not just because it’s the weekend but Netflix has finally updated my life with more Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and weekly episodes of Orphan Black being released. Friday is GOOD! And I’m telling you all now, you all know it’s only going to be Friday that will be good because I’ll probably watch all UKS episodes tonight

Let’s do one at a time.

Orphan Black

I can’t with this show.
First: Tatiana Maslany. Beautiful. Emotive. Believable. She portrays each clone like a boss queen of acting and every episode just gets me. From the brainy Cosima, crazy ass Helena to highly-strung Alison to messy but brilliant Sarah. Even Rachel. Total bitch but still brilliant. I can’t. Just. Bury me now.

(The scene with all the clones dancing in Felix’s apartment reached me on levels and I started crying…)

The other thing about OB is that it’s not easy for me to keep up with the show because of the amount of the science. I don’t do science. I still have those Letts year 9 textbooks in my room but science and me, no. But this show makes science so cool and it makes it interesting. Of course I still get lost but wtfever.

Can we also talk about a show that has a child star in it that gets a rough deal and is still adorable and not at all annoying? Kira, let’s watch some Disney and eat Oreos.

Between Felix, Mrs S and just everything, I love this show. The way the portrayed lesbianism, betrayal, children put through the care/foster system and getting away from an abusive boyfriend. The way that it portrays trust being built and how paranoid it can make you when you imagine that someone you love has been watching you for years.

(Not really but dammmmmmmmn Tatiana)

Orphan Black’s first episode for the fourth season is here and I have no idea what’s going to happen this season and I won’t know for another few weeks as I’m going to be watching every episode from the beginning to make sure I can back up everything I’ll be throwing around the Yahoo offices, with facts and a damn good gif.

Watch the show. Just do it.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Firstly. I couldn’t deal with UKS when it first started. I’m British. We do comedy in a different way to America. See AbFab vs Friends. We do either very obvious laughs like Mr Bean, do it well and it becomes legendary or we make shows with laughs that you never thought would make you crack up such as the Royle Family.

Anyway, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt has those kind of jokes which can pass you by or force a laugh so as not to feel awkward but it somehow works. Props to the writing team.

Over the space of a few days, I rewatched Kimmy Schmidt and now I can sing Peeno Noir and ‘I Beat That Bitch With A Bat’ is a guilty pleasure. Sorry. But it is. That beat is on point.

UKS still has some typical American errors like the only Vietnamese guy being called ‘Dong’ and being good at maths. That a First Nation Native American would leave her life so quickly to become a WASPy type. So again, props to the writing team for managing to get people excited and interested when these few things could make or break a show.

UKS has some good laughs and the main one is Titus.

This show would be nothing without the funny, gay black guy (don’t hate, that’s the black and white of it). Titus could have had a show all by himself. Faking straight, moving to NYC, hiding from his wife, meeting Lilian, becoming not Iron Man, Coriolanus fights etc. Heck. Everything about Titus screams spin-off. His way of telling truth, whilst stealing a scene and being crazily camp without drawing breath is brilliance. Also, a shoutout to his open speaking of race. It’s refreshing.

Now that season two is out, I advise you to jump straight in if, like me, you’ve watched season one enough times that you can get into season two like it’s not been a year.

Which is has been Netflix. It’s been a year. A YEAR

Watch Orphan Black and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt now.
