Netflix’s ‘Old Dads’ Is a Hit With Older Millennials | Charts
The millennial generation is now deep into its parenting stage. With some millennials already into their 40s and the term “geriatric millennial” getting thrown around, it seems that some members of the generation are embracing the “old” label.
That may explain how “Old Dads,” the Netflix comedy about aging fathers losing their edge, soared to the top of the streaming chart on the Samba TV Weekly Wrap Report for the week of Oct. 16 to 22. Older millennials, ages 35-44, drove that viewership, as that demographic over-indexed by 3%.
The Wrap Report provides an exclusive first look at the most-watched movies and TV series from the past week across both streaming and linear television sourced from viewership trends collected from Samba TV’s panel of more than 3 million households drawn from over 25 million connected TVs, balanced to the U.S. Census.
Coming in second behind “Old Dads” is “The Fall of the House of Usher,” a Netflix horror series that was in second place on last week’s chart as well. “Usher” is one of just two entries on this week’s chart that fit the mold of “spooky” programming just one week before Halloween. The other, “The Devil on Trial,” also from Netflix, is eighth this week. The documentary looks at the infamous time demonic possession was used as a defense in a murder trial.
Remaining in third this week is “The Burial” from Amazon Prime Video, propelled by the star power of Jamie Foxx and Tommy Lee Jones. “Loki,” the Marvel series on Disney+, rises up the charts, moving from seventh place last week into fourth this week. That’s followed by “Love is Blind,” the Netflix dating show that has planted itself in the middle of the streaming chart for several weeks running.
“Bodies,” another debut from Netflix, lands in sixth. The science-fiction series, an adaptation of a popular graphic novel, follows four detectives across time as they all try to solve the murder of a mysterious body found in London.
Apple TV+ had a big week as well with two entries in the Top 10. The first, “The Morning Show,” returns to the chart several weeks after its premiere and lands in seventh. “Lessons in Chemistry,” a new miniseries starring Brie Larson, is 10th.
The sixth and final Netflix entry on the streaming chart this week is here to give everyone warm fall fuzzy feelings. This week’s episode of “The Great British Baking Show” is the ninth most-watched streaming program.
While the streaming chart changes depending on the week’s big debuts, the linear Top 10 has become a model of consistency. Nine of this week’s 10 entries are carry-overs from last week. This includes “The Voice” on NBC, which holds three spots on the Top 10. The singing competition is number one for the fourth-straight week, with additional episodes claiming the third and fourth spots on the linear chart.
After that, “Dancing with the Stars” rises from third to second place, “Yellowstone” jumps up two spots to fifth, and “The Golden Bachelor” slides from second down to sixth. Meanwhile, “Survivor” moves up from ninth to seventh, “Saturday Night Live” remains in eighth, and “Wheel of Fortune” gains one spot, landing in ninth this week.
The lone new entry on the linear chart, “Celebrity Jeopardy,” rounds out the list in 10th place.
