Supacell fans are demanding a second helping of the ground-breaking new sci-fi series, which was only released on Thursday (June 27).

The six-parter tells the story of five black South Londoners who suddenly develop superpowers. The brainchild of rapper and filmmaker Rapman, also known as Andrew Onwubolu, it features a predominantly black cast and crew.

The Jay-Z approved series has been described as a cross between gangster series Top Boy and hit superhero show Misfits. Rapman announced Supacell in 2020, a year after the release of his crime-thriller film Blue Story.

Supacell stars Tosin Cole as Michael Lasaki, a van driver who's in head-over-heels in love with life - and fiancée Dionne. His dream future is soon snatched away when he discovers he can time travel.

He quickly learns that Dionne's life is in danger and must find four others who've also developed superpowers in order to save Dionne's life. The unlikely bunch of newbie superheroes are figuring out exactly what their powers mean, and why they have them.

Supacell tackles a number of themes including knife crime, racial profiling and sickle cell - a blood disorder which impacts some 17,000 people in England. Rapman serves as show runner, executive producer and director, calling the shots on episodes one, two and six. Episodes three, four and five are handled by Sebastian Thiel.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, fans revealed they'd already binged all six episodes in one night - and were eager for more. One said it was 'criminal' that there wasn't more to watch. @actressatlarge wrote: "#Supacell needs a season 2 & 3 immediately. None of that 6 episodes every two years ish promise me more now".

@maki_ogunbor shared: "Think I’m going to rewatch Supacell today. Not even joking, that’s how good it is. I need more!" as @CarmaChords reflected: "Supacell is a sci-fi, thriller, romance and drama all in one with themes of sickle cell awareness, abduction awareness of minorities and so much more. A very smart and well thought out show. Deserves a lot more seasons and I think it will get them."

@illcallyouback0 wrote: "I haven’t even finished #Supacell and I need more, 6 episodes is criminal" as @victoria_ah0 demanded: "@NetflixUK i need that supacell season 2 with speed and efficiency". @illcallyouback0

As Supacell has only just released, it's too early to know whether or not we'll get another instalment. A renewal hinges on a number of factors, including of course how popular the drama proves.

But Rapman previously hinted to the Radio Times: "For the beginning of the show, I always tell everyone that season one of Supacell to me is like Batman Begins. It's just beginning. You've got to see where it goes next to see who these people really are."

Supacell is available to stream now on Netflix.
