Netflix warns accounts have been 'discontinued' and says 'it's automatic'

Netflix has warned customers over a "discontinued" plan and told them it is "automatic". The streamer, which is the home of Stranger Things, as well as the likes of The Queen's Gambit, Baby Reindeer and more, has circulated an email to subscribers.

Under an email titled 'Updated plan', Netflix said: "Hi [customer name], When your Basic plan was discontinued, your membership was automatically updated to the Standard with adverts plan. Here are your new payment details."

It added: "We’re here to help if you need it." It went on to say: "Learn more about your advert-supported plan, or contact us. The Netflix team." A Netflix ad-supported plan allows you to enjoy movies and TV shows at a lower price.

It said: "Our ad-supported plan includes commercial breaks in most TV shows and movies. While the vast majority of TV shows and movies are available on an ad-supported plan, a small number are not due to licensing restrictions.

"These titles will appear with a lock icon when you search or browse Netflix. Sign up for Standard with ads today and choose from several payment options. You can easily change your plan or cancel at any time."

It added: "A small percentage of devices that can play on ad-free Netflix plans can't be used with an ad-supported Netflix plan. This is because either the Netflix app or software on the device can't be updated to a version that supports ads."

You can use the Netflix app on your TV or TV streaming device to check if it's compatible with an ad-supported plan. If you're already signed in to Netflix, go to the home screen, then go left to open the menu. At the bottom, select Get Help > Plan Compatibility.

If you aren't signed in, open the Netflix app. In the bottom left, select Get Help > Plan Compatibility.
