Avatar: The Last Airbender premieres early next year on Netflix, it's been revealed in the live-action remake's first trailer.

Featuring the likes of Gordon Cormier, Ken Leung, Ian Ousley, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Dallas Liu, Daniel Dae Kim and breakout Prey actress Amber Midthunder, the eagerly-anticipated series takes viewers to a war-ravaged world where certain people can harness the power of water, earth, fire and air - bending these elements to their will.

Fans will be able to see all of the action when the show lands on the streaming platform on February 22, 2024.

First commissioned in 2018, it's an adaptation of the beloved Nickelodeon animation that ran for three seasons between 2005 and 2008.

During the trailer, a narrator says: "Time. Time is a funny thing. The past, the future, it all gets mixed up. There's only one way to keep it straight. Always remember who you are," as fiery and watery action unfolds across the various kingdoms.

Then we're shown a Falkor-like creature from The NeverEnding Story, Appa, which whisks airbender Aang and his comrades into the sky.

The Last Airbender fans may be hoping the show's creative overhaul won't have dampened the magic on screen, with original creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko departing the project back in 2020.

"I realised I couldn't control the creative direction of the series, but I could control how I responded," the former wrote on his website. "So, I chose to leave the project. It was the hardest professional decision I've ever had to make, and certainly not one that I took lightly, but it was necessary for my happiness and creative integrity. And who knows? Netflix's live-action adaptation of Avatar has the potential to be good. It might turn out to be a show many of you end up enjoying.

"But what I can be certain about is that whatever version ends up on screen, it will not be what Bryan and I had envisioned or intended to make."
