Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender has given fans a first glimpse of the live-action Uncle Iroh, played by Paul Sun-Hyung Lee.

Lee will make his debut as the beloved character – who was voiced by the late Makoto Iwamatsu in the first two seasons of the animated series – when the show premieres next year.

The Last Airbender will centre on the story of Aang, a young Avatar who has mastered control of all four elements – fire, water, air and earth.

The series' ensemble cast also includes stars such as George Takei, Arden Cho, Prey's Amber Midthunder and Mythic Quest's Danny Pudi.

Since the show was first announced back in 2018, The Last Airbender has gone through some significant background changes.

The animated series' co-creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko decided to leave the live-action adaptation due to creative differences.

"I realised I couldn't control the creative direction of the series, but I could control how I responded," DiMartino wrote on his website. "So, I chose to leave the project.

"It was the hardest professional decision I've ever had to make, and certainly not one that I took lightly, but it was necessary for my happiness and creative integrity.

"And who knows? Netflix's live-action adaptation of Avatar has the potential to be good. It might turn out to be a show many of you end up enjoying.

"But what I can be certain about is that whatever version ends up on screen, it will not be what Bryan and I had envisioned or intended to make."

Konietzko added on Instagram that the duo "ultimately came to the belief that we would not be able to meaningfully guide the direction of the series".

A Netflix spokesperson said on news of their departure: "We have complete respect and admiration for Michael and Bryan and the story that they created in the Avatar animated series.

"Although they have chosen to depart the live-action project, we are confident in the creative team and their adaptation."
