The Netherlands have been disqualified from the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, after act Joost Klein committed what organisers are claiming, was 'a breach of rules.'

A huge fan favourite for months now, Joost made it into this year's Eurovision final, after qualifying from Thursday's second final as audiences at the show and at home went wild for his entry Europapa. However, as he climbed up the betting on Friday morning, just a few hours later, things took a turn when, having appeared in the flag parade at the dress rehearsal, Joost didn't get to perform on stage.

Without elaborating on what the incident was, a statement from Eurovision organisers, the European Broadcasting Union read: "We are currently investigating an incident that was reported to us involving the Dutch artist. He will not be rehearsing until further notice. We have no further comment at this time and will update in due course.”

Joost was missing from Friday night's jury final, with an announcement on him not being there booed by fans at the Malmo Arena, before his semi final performance aired on the big screen. And, just before 11.30am UK time on Saturday, it was confirmed Netherlands had been disqualified.

Confirming the disqualification, new statement read: "The Dutch artist Joost Klein will not be competing in the Grand Final of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. Swedish police have investigated a complaint made by a female member of the production crew after an incident following his performance in Thursday night’s Semi Final. While the legal process takes its course, it would not be appropriate for him to continue in the Contest."

The EBU added: "We would like to make it clear that, contrary to some media reports and social media speculation, this incident did not involve any other performer or delegation member.

"We maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards inappropriate behaviour at our event and are committed to providing a safe and secure working environment for all staff at the Contest. In light of this, Joost Klein’s behaviour towards a team member is deemed in breach of Contest rules."
