Newcastle United can now get cut-price £25m deal on player Rafa Benitez loved

Former Newcastle United target Tammy Abraham is set for a summer transfer switch - and the Magpies would only have to pay around £25m for his services.

The AS Roma striker looks likely leave Italy this summer, with Aston Villa and West Ham reportedly locked in a race for his signature. The former England star could be available for as little as £25m with the Serie A side needing to offload players to meet financial fair play restrictions.

United boast two strong frontline options in Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson, although the latter again missed large parts of last season through injury. Wilson's goal return is always impressive, but some have suggested the Magpies need another option to be able to cover for and play alongside Isak.

After a strong start to his time in Italy which saw Abraham smash 27 goals in the 2021-22 campaign, his return has dimished somewhat, and he managed just one goal in 12 appaarances last term. He suffered with injuries during his time in the Italian capital, but at just 26, is entering his prime years.

He's a player Newcastle have previously held a strong interest in, with former United manager Rafa Benitez keen to bring him to Tyneside in 2017 following an impressive loan spell at Bristol City. The then Chelsea striker appeared to be heading to St James' Park, but no deal materialised and he instead joined Swansea City on loan.

While that move didn't produce the goals he had seen in Bristol, another loan move to Aston Villa the following year saw Abraham hit 25 goals in 37 appearances, which persuaded Chelsea that the time was right for him to push for a first-team place at his parent club.

Abraham has been capped by England 11 times, scoring three goals, and after two in-and-out seasons at Stamford Bridge, he finally made a permanent move away, joining Roma for around £34m in 2021, winning the Europa Conference League under Jose Mourinho in 2022.

His availability this summer has alerted a number of clubs, with the striker able to play across the front line. West Ham are said to be favourites to land Abraham, although Villa are keen, and La Gazetta dello Sport report his 'fate is back in the Premier League'.
