Newcastle United rocked by fresh Lewis Miley injury as youngster faces months on sidelines

Newcastle United have been rocked by a summer injury to Lewis Miley. The teenager has suffered an injury to his metatarsal and will miss all the pre-season action - including the long haul trip to Japan.

Chronicle Live understands that the 18-year-old will be out for 12 weeks in total. The injury was suffered while the player was out running in a bid to be fit for the start of the new season and he will go under the knife on Monday.

Miley picked up a back injury at the back end of the 2023/24 campaign while he was away with England Elite League Squad during this international break in March. The teen played 90 minutes during a 5-1 win over Poland 5-1 but then missed the following game against the Czech Republic.

The latest injury is a huge blow for the Magpies given Howe will have wanted to see Miley in action during pre-season. Speaking at the end of last season, the Newcastle boss said: "Lewy has always been in a position with me this year, with the amount of games he was playing, I was very wary of his minutes. I was always trying to protect him when I felt I could.

"I'd not start him when I had another option because he is so young and his body is still developing.”

Newcastle players are set to return to pre-season training next week before a busy month of pre-season fixtures. The Magpies will face Hull City before jetting out to Japan for two friendlies at the end of July and start of August. St James' Park will then host the 'Sela Weekender' before the Premier League returns.
