Newcastle United can sign Arsenal defender for surprise £10m cut-price deal

Former Newcastle United target Kieran Tierney could be available for as little as £10m this summer as Arsenal look to offload the Scotland international.

Left-back Tierney was strongly linked with a move to St James' Park last year, with the Gunners looking for £30m for the experienced defender at that stage. With no clubs willing to meet that valuation, he left the Emirates for a season-long loan deal with Real Sociedad in Spain's La Liga.

The 27-year-old made played 26 time in all competitions last season, including two Champions League appearances for Sociedad, although a hamstring problem did hamper his time in Spain. However, while he will return to Arsenal this summer, he is reportedly surplus to requirements in North London, with the Gunners looking to move him on in a cut-price deal.

United were interested 12 months ago, but have since signed Lewis Hall from Chelsea, with Dan Burn and Matt Targett both able to play at left-back. Hall had to be patient for a run in the first-team, but showed towards the end of last season why Newcastle were willing to pay around £30m for the 19-year-old.

Whether the Magpies would look to rekindle their interest in Tierney given the much lower asking price remains to be seen, but former Scotland and Celtic team-mate Stephen O'Donnell feels the defender still has plenty to offer.

"Kieran, if he stays fit, is one of the best full-backs in the world, without question," he said of Tierney, who is part of Steve Clarke's Scotland squad for Euro 24. "He is a top player, a top guy and if he is playing we will certainly be a better outfit with him. He has great qualities. I still found it a bit strange what happened to him at Arsenal. Obviously, I wasn't there, but he was one of their players of the year the season before and then he goes out on loan to Sociedad.

"When he first broke through at Celtic he was incredible and to then move on and go where he's been is great. At one point he was linked with Real Madrid and that was maybe a 'what if' moment if he managed to stay fit, but you can't have everything. I'm honestly really delighted to see him back and see him going to the Euros. Hopefully we see him kick on."
