Newcastle United's Matt Ritchie has passed his test to become the driver of a large goods vehicle.

Less than 24 hours after the Magpies 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, 34-year-old Ritchie was pictured celebrating passing his LGV licence in front of a lorry. Tyne & Wear LGV Driver Training Centre Limited, where Ritchie took the test, offered their congratulations to the winger on Facebook.

He said: "Congratulations to Newcastle United player Matt Ritchie on passing his Category C Driving licence today on his 1st attempt. Look forward to seeing you back for your Category C+E."

Fans seemed to be amused and bemused by the news in equal measure, with one fan saying: "When he got told to park the bus he took it literally, fair play," while another said: "When they said Ritchie might get a job as a coach I didn’t think they meant driver".

Another said: "Matt Ritchie retiring from football to spend his retirement driving long distances alone, in meditative silence. Just feels right somehow."

One even offered him the prospect of work, saying: "Just saying… I run a transport depot if you’re ever looking for work Matt Ritchie."

The former Scotland international has made most of his appearances from the bench this season, scoring a late equaliser against his former club Bournemouth. His contract expires at the end of the 2023/24 season, and it has not yet been confirmed if he will be offered a new one.
