Newcastle's maddest raves - from wild scenes on Metro to police raid on Tyne Bridge

There was some shock this week when a group of friends, including well known DJ Schak, managed to get into the abandoned Wet n Wild water park in North Shields to have their very own rave, with pictures and videos being widely shared online. But, the truth is that that was the latest in a growing line of random gatherings in and around the city, with Schak having a part in four of them.

Police were called to Wet n Wild on Wednesday night, having been made aware of the rave inside one of its slide towers, with three people, including Schak himself, being arrested on suspicion of 'causing a public nuisance,' before then being released with no further action taken.

Speaking to ChronicleLive after being free to go, North Shields star Schak said: "We did it right at the top where the Kamikaze and the Black Hole is. We got the sunset, the sun was shining through the glass at the top and it was really nice. I played a mixture of my music and I finished off with some makina. I think it's probably the first time makina has been played in there!"

Over the last few years there have been number of parties at unexpected locations. Here we look at some of them and the attention they attracted.

Tyne Bridge

As 2016 became 2017, hundreds of people managed to get inside the famous bridge’s northern lift shaft on New Year's Eve and party until the early hours. Sound equipment was illegally linked up to the electricity supply to power the party, while police spent 45 minutes using heavy duty saws to get into the building to break it up.

Footage quickly emerged from inside the tower of the dramatic moment officers cut their way into the Grade II listed structure to turf out hundreds of revellers. Speaking to The Chronicle at the time, an eye witness said: “They smashed a wooden door and then they started using a circular saw to cut through a metal vault door.

“They were shouting at people to come out otherwise they would go in with the dogs.”

Ouseburn sewer

Just a few months after the Tyne Bridge rave, Northumbria Police dealt with another on the outskirts of the city, in a sewer beneath the bridges at the mouth of the River Ouseburn.

Around 200 people waded through filthy water for the event in the cramped tunnels which was halted at around 4am on the night in question, after one worried raver contacted the force over safety fears. However, speaking to ChronicleLive, one of the students who organised the party hit back at accusations it was 'dangerous' saying: "“We organised it and we took safety precautions,” he said.

“We had traffic cones set up so people wouldn’t carry on in the tunnel and get lost, the place was well lit. We took safety measures, we think we were reasonably responsible. We shut it down of our own accord.”

On the Metro

It's back to DJ Schak for this one. A man whose known for embracing everything to do with his homeland, Schak saw an opportunity to bring a party to the famous transport network in 2022.

Schak, who also hosted a rave in a branch of B&Q, donned a hi-vis for the occasion, as he took to the decks to entertain a packed carriage of ravers on a train bound for St James' station in Newcastle

Shields Ferry

Schak was the man behind this one as well, after joking that 'nowhere was safe.' Addressing the Metro and Shields Ferry raves, a Nexus spokesperson said; "The Metro and the Shields Ferry are firmly part of the communities that they serve, and we are always keen to work with people who want to bring more performing arts events to our network.

“However, it is vital that this is done in conjunction with Nexus so that it can be managed safely and appropriately, which should have been the case in these instances.”

Greggs

Yep you've guessed it - it's Schak again. Only this one was well above aboard, with police actually parking up outside the Northumberland branch of the famous bakers while the Sausage Rolls and Stompers night was happening. rather than shutting it down.

Over the moon about how it went, Schak took to Instagram the morning after to write: ""Here man last neet was such a crease. thank you so much to @greggs_official @lab54_uk & @armadamusic for hosting us, was such an honour to play at Greggs the whole thing was so radge even the Bizzies turned up."

He added: "Massive shout to everyone who came down was f**king unreal! @abithesinger @willatkinson90 was such a pleasure sharing a stage with you guys. Would also like to say a massive thank you to Greggs for giving us a deluxe golden box of pasties feel like I won a golden ticket to Willy Wonkas factory. What a belter UP THE TOON!"

Greggs also posted about the rave on Insta, with the famous Geordie bakery writing: "A glow stick in one hand, Sausage Roll in the other? Huge thanks to North East legend @schak___ and @willatkinson90 for bringing the beats and vibes."

Wet n Wild

And we'll end with the one that's got everyone talking this week, after Schak and his pals managed to get inside a place that they visited many times in their youth, with Schak playing a set that included a burst of his own smash hit Jumpin' All Around, before police arrived on the scene.

Talking about it on Instagram, Schak wrote: "Wet n Wild oi oi. Last neet we made history! So buzzing we managed to get in before this gets demolished, I’ve wanted to film content in here for ages as it’s such an iconic part of North Shields."
