Anne Hathaway Opens Up On Fame And Celebrity: ‘It Really F**ked Me Up!’

Anne Hathaway is undoubtedly one of the most settled actresses around, with a doting husband and a Best Supporting Actress Oscar award to match, but the Hollywood starlet admits she didn’t always have her head screwed down, revealing that the fame game “f**ked” her up for a while.

The 31-year-old shot to fame starring in The Princess Diaries films during the noughties and became one of Tinsletown’s screen darlings but it seems the sudden celebrity and fortune wasn’t all it was cracked up to be in the beginning, with Anne candidly revealing that she struggled to deal with the attention initially.

Opening up to Elle magazine, Anne explained: “This fame thing? F**ked me up for a really long time. I didn't know how to do it; I didn't know how to engage with it; it stressed me out. And people would say, 'You just have to be yourself,' and I was like, 'But I don't know who that is yet!’”

After Oscar win in 2013, Anne announced that she was going to take a break from the spotlight, telling The Huffington Post: “My impression is that people needed a break from me.” Well, Anne did just that and over the next 12 months, her only priority was being a wife to husband Adam Shulman whom she married in September 2012. “The first year of my marriage was insane. So much happened so fast, and we didn't get to focus on just being married until about a year in,” Anne revealed.

“So now, it's just about letting myself feel safe…There was a part of me that I was keeping in reserve, and when I got married, something shifted…That question of, 'How long's this gonna last?' is off the table. And when you're not worried about that, there's space to just be silly.”

Explaining how she has grown over the last year or so, the brunette said: “I've realised that don't need validation from anybody. At all. I'm not sitting here now worrying, 'What do you think of me?' With all due respect, you seem like a lovely lady, but I don't need you, or anyone else, to like me. And that's so liberating. It's a big reveal, man.”
