Brad Pitt has done the honourable thing and donated a bit of money to Southampton General Hospital, making less than a dent in his multi-million pound fortune.

The 48-year-old Snatch actor made himself a saint amongst the people of Southampton by giving £700 to a fundraising appeal for a neonatal unit at Southampton General Hospital where his pal’s son, Zachary Gallagher, had spent the first nine weeks of his life.

“The fundraiser had finished, and I got a phone call from my best friend, who said, ‘We have had a small donation,’’ Zachary’s mother, Karley Gallagher, 23, tells PEOPLE.

She added: ''I thought she was messing about and was going to say, ‘My dad’s given you a fiver’ or something, then she said, ‘It’s from Brad Pitt!’’

And after finding out shooting of his new movie World War Z clashed with a fundraising day, Brad made sure organisers didn’t lose out on any money by supporters being lured into his filming location instead.

Tricia Wilson-Hughes, the event organiser for the charitable day, revealed she was given an envelope full of cash by two bodyguards.

She said: “I was totally gobsmacked. I thought they were going to give me £50 or something.’’

“Brad also signed postcards for us to sell for the fund and promised to do a whipround of the film crew and to send a donation from LA. Amazing,’’ The Sun reports.

And while Pitt was in New York on Monday for a special screening of Killing Them Softly, he plans to fly back to the UK to contine filming while the Jolie-Pitt clan is already focusing on their next holiday abroad.
