Charlize Theron and Carey Mulligan are allegedly set to battle it out to see who will play Princess Diana in the upcoming £30 million biopic.

The Oscar-winning South African actress Charlize, 36, is favourite to play the late Princess although because it's set before her divorce from Prince Charles, it's thought that 26-year-old Carey is in with a chance.

British film producer Stephen Evans, who has had big success with movies such as 'The Iron Lady' about the former Prime Minister Magaret Thatcher will based the film on Diana's former bodyguard's memoirs.

Ewan McGregor is likely to play Ken Wharfe, Diana's former bodyguard with Evans keen to tell the world the 'truth' in behind what happened to the late Princess, who would have been 51 this year.

Wharfe, who was called 'Uncle Ken' by Diana's sons Prince William and Harry, was often put in charge of the young boys and he released his book 'Diana: Closely Guarded Secret' in 2009, 10 years after her death.

The new movie is due for release in 2012, and will focus on the 11 years after Diana gave birth to Harry, although it will not touch on Diana's relationship with Dodi Fayed or any conspiracy theories surrounding her death.

"The emphasis on this really is authenticity and to discover what she went through. Unless you are a Diana freak, quite a lot of it will be unknown to the audience," Evans told The Sunday Mirror.

"The movie’s not saying she is unbelievably wonderful or she’s a pain in the neck, the audience can make their own view."

"I think she had some marvellous qualities, absolutely phenomenal qualities and tremendous charisma. She was also very good at one-liners ...very witty, sharp," he continued.

"Intellectually, she was not in the top level but on the other hand had native cunning, stubbornness." He also added: "Once she made up her mind she was like a bulldozer. She could be a pain, she was lethal. She-utilised friendships and dumped friendships."
