One Direction's Single 'Story Of My Life' Ahead Of Lady Gaga’s 'Venus' On iTunes Chart

Lady Gaga has been beaten by One Direction and their latest release ‘Story Of My Life’ which is currently sat at number one in the iTunes chart, despite the eccentric popstar making an appearance on the X Factor last night.

Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne have shot straight to the top of the chart with their latest single taken from upcoming album ‘Midnight Memories’. After premiering the track on October 25, it took just two days for the lads to reach the top spot of iTunes digital downloads chart.

The track is distinctly different to the preceding single ‘Best Song Ever’ and sees 1D return to a soppier, slower style which will remind fans of their 2012 single ‘Little Things’. Heartfelt lyrics including: “Written in these walls are the stories that I can't explain I leave my heart open but it stays right here empty for days,” have had fans rushing to download the single while their third album is already one of the best-selling records of 2013, based on pre sales alone.

Meanwhile, Lady Gaga’s 'Venus' occupies the second spot, even though it was downgraded from its single status last week and replaced by ‘Do What U Want’ featuring R. Kelly. The ‘Born This Way’ singer explained the move on Twitter, writing: “Don't worry monsters! We are still scheduled to release #Venus this Monday with a snippet on Friday! AND it will STILL have its own video!”

Then adding: “However we are overwhelmed by the worldwide response + excitement for DO WHAT U WANT feat. R KELLY & are happy to announce it as 2nd Single!”

Gaga’s highly anticipated X Factor performance took place last night and didn’t disappoint. Sporting a long blonde wig and seashell bikini, the 27-year-old performed a high-energy rendition of ‘Venus’ complete with a troupe of dancers before pulling off the wig and launching into ‘Do What U Want’, which has reached number ten in the iTunes chart.

Lower down, Tinie Tempah’s ‘Children Of The Sun’ sits at number 14 and rapper Eminem has only just managed to scrape into the Top 40 with his latest release ‘Rap God’. In the iTunes album chart, Arcade Fire’s ‘Reflektor’ is number one and New Zealand singer Lorde’s ‘Pure Heroine’ sits at number two.

Though both acts have upcoming albums, they won’t go head-to-head for number one. Gaga’s ‘ARTPOP’ is released on November 11 while 1D fans will have to wait until November 25 to hear ‘Midnight Memories’ in full. As the US megastar continues her mini-tour of Europe, debuting new material in each country visited, the UK boyband are busy finishing up their world tour by completing the final few performances in Australia and New Zealand.
