Emma Watson has topped a readers' poll to replace Matt Smith as the next Doctor Who, beating the likes of Jenna-Louise Coleman and Miranda Hart.

In The Sun readers' vote, the Harry Potter star came out as a clear winner with 29%, followed by comedian Miranda with 15% and then Jenna Louise-Coleman, who currently stars alongside Matt in the sci-fi series.

One actress who has denied that she'll be replacing Matt as the Doctor is Dame Helen Mirren, who recently said that she'd love a female to replace Matt, but that she won't be the one playing the role.

Appearing on ITV's Daybreak this week, Helen dismissed the claims that she was in the running to take over from Matt who will leave the show at the end of the year, but did say: "I’m not going to be the first female Doctor Who, no, no, no, absolutely not, I absolutely wouldn’t contemplate that...but I do think it’s well over-time to have a female Doctor Who...I think a gay, black female Doctor Who would be the best of all.”

However, former Coronation Street actress Georgia Taylor has blasted these claims, saying that it's just not going to happen and the role of the Doctor will always be male.

Georgia, who used to play the role of Toyah Battersby on the soap, disagrees as The Sun reported her saying: "It’s never going to happen. That’s not me doing a disservice to womankind, it is just one of those things."

Using the example of Lucy Liu being appointed to play the role of Sherlock's side kick in the US show Elementary - a role which is usually played by an actor, Georgia continued: “It’s a bit like when they did Elementary. It wasn’t even Sherlock, it was his assistant, but the outrage THAT caused... I don’t think they will ever do it and I think now I am getting too old to even be The Doctor’s assistant."

“They are all in their early 20s, and pretty. I think that ship has sailed for me, but I would like to be a Doctor Who baddie.”
