'The Shawshank Redemption' has been named as the best film to miss out on winning an Oscar for Best Picture.

The movie was nominated in the best picture category for the 1995 Academy Awards but it missed out to Tom Hanks’ 'Forrest Gump'.

'Shawshank', which starred Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins, came out on top in a survey conducted by bosses of the new Sky Movies Oscars HD channel.

The picture was followed by 'The Green Mile', which was made by the same director, Frank Darabont, and both films were based on stories by author Stephen King.

Other films to make the list include 'To Kill A Mockingbird', 'Mary Poppins', 'Avatar', 'ET' and 'Saving Private Ryan', among others.

Director of Sky Movies, Ian Lewis, said: “Arguably the most prestigious accolade in the film industry, competition is fierce when it comes to the Academy Award for best picture – and as we’ve found even some of the nation’s best-loved movies of all time were pipped to the post in this category."
