Move Over Chris Hemsworth: Thor Is Now A Woman

Think of Marvel comic book legend Thor and the chances are you’ll picture a muscle-bound man with a red cape wielding a giant hammer, more than likely being portrayed by Chris Hemsworth on the big screen.

Well think again because in a shock move that will startle comic book fans across the globe, Marvel have recreated the famous character – as a woman!

In a news article on Marvel.com, editor Wil Moss said: “The inscription on Thor’s hammer reads ‘Whosoever holds this hammer, if HE be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.’ Well it’s time to update that inscription.”

He added: “The new Thor continues Marvel’s proud tradition of strong female characters like Captain Marvel, Storm, Black Widow and more. And this new Thor isn’t a temporary female substitute – she’s now the one and only Thor – and she’s worthy!”

Meanwhile, series writer Jason Aaron said: “This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before.”

The new series, THOR, is expected to launch this October and will be written by Jason Aaron while the art will be provided by Russell Dauterman.

The Marvel website describes the decision to recreate the God of Thunder character as female as “one of the most shocking and exciting changes ever to shake one of the ‘big three’ of Captain America, Iron Man and Thor.” The site also features an image of the new-look superhero.

In recent years Thor, of Norse mythology, has been played in the movies by Hollywood star Chris Hemsworth, first in 2011’s Thor, which was followed by Thor: The Dark World in 2013. He’s also played the Mjölnir-wielding legend in the Avengers series: Avengers Assemble in 2012, with Avengers: Age Of Ultron expected to hit cinema screens next year sometime.

In 2011 Thor followed the hero as he was cast out of Asgard to live with humans on Earth. Natalie Portman played female lead Jane Foster while it was Brit actor Tom Hiddleston’s first appearance as Thor’s enemy Loki.

The move to change Thor from male to female – which has already divided opinion among comic book fans, if looking at the comments section under the Marvel article is anything to go by – is aimed at encouraging more women and girls to get involved in the comic book scene.

The new Thor will be the eighth Marvel title to feature a lead female protagonist. Marvel says the new version “aims to speak directly to an audience that long was not the target for superhero comic books in America – women and girls.”

Meanwhile, Avengers Assemble director Joss Whedon tweeted: "A female Thor? What the hell makes them think THAT would be cool?" He acompanied his tweet with a picture of Battlestar Galactica actress Katee Sackhoff.

Changing iconic characters’ gender has always been a controversial topic. Last year, when the new Doctor Who was yet to be revealed, there was widespread speculation that the role could go to a woman. It was eventually awarded to The Thick Of It actor Peter Capaldi.

But with the hero now a heroine, we’re already wondering which actress might play Thor in any upcoming films, should the movie world follow the comic books by changing the character’s gender. We’d also love to know what Chris Hemsworth thinks of the move! And how will The Big Bang Theory's comic book fan Sheldon, played by Jim Parsons, cope?!
