Just hours before Glastonbury Festival opens its gates, a new headliner has thrown their hat in the ring. Newton Faulkner - known for the top ten hit Dream Catch Me - confirmed on Monday that he will be performing at the famous festival this weekend.

Writing on X, the singer announced: "If you asked me last week if I was playing [Glastonbury Festival] I would have said sadly not. [But] if you asked me now I’d say HELL YEA, SATURDAY 21:40-22:40 ON THE AVALON STAGE!!!!!!"

Faulkner is known by fans for his earnest, stripped-back brand of folk, evoking the musical charms of Jason Mraz and Plain White Tees. His biggest hit- an ode to falling in love called Dream Catch Me - was released in 2007 and has 14 million views on YouTube to date.

The singer and guitarist also has a collection of successful albums. His 2007 debut, Hand Built by Robots , shot to #1 on the UK album charts, while the follow-up Rebuilt by Humans reached #3.

His third album, 2012's Write It on Your Skin, wrote itself into the history books by achieving the coveted #1 spot. Meanwhile, Studio Zoo became his fourth top ten album the following year.

The Avalon Stage is known for its folksy charm. Glastonbury's website says: "like an island in the sea of Glastonbury, the Field of Avalon maintains its unbroken connection to the earthy Eden.

"Once part of the Greenfields it remains as one of the original areas still visited by a diverse lineage of legendary musicians, artists and fellow pilgrims. Festival travellers come to rest their weary legs and recharge with a pint of ale, delicious food and some of the best and diverse musical programs on site.

"Expect days of eclectic music representing the best in the world of contemporary, roots and folk music, a gender equal line-up and intimate, never-forget Glastonbury moments when you visit the Field of Avalon."

Newton Faulkner will be in good company. Other headliners at the Avalon Stage include X Factor star Lucy Spraggan, indie queen Kate Nash, and musical legend Lulu.

Lucy Spraggan charmed audiences in 2012 when she auditioned for The X Factor with her own original song, Last Night. (Beer Fear) One of the most talked about acts that year, she became the first X Factor finalist to perform her own song for the live episodes.

While she was a favourite to win, she sadly withdrew from the competition after three live shows for personal reasons. Her viral song Last Night made a splash on the charts the following year, skirting just outside the top ten at #11.

The quirky Kate Nash, who first wowed listeners with her biting wit and distinctive London twang on the hit Foundations, will also be performing. Festivalgoers may also recognise her from her acting roles, playing a ditzy female wrestler in Netflix's GLOW and Queen Boudica in Horrible Histories: The Movie.

Meanwhile, 60s star Lulu will be dazzling crowds on Friday night. This may be a rare chance for festivalgoers to see a living legend, as the veteran musician has said she plans to retire from touring soon.
