Next Leicester City manager odds as Man Utd legend a shock option to replace Enzo Maresca

Esteban Cambiasso celebrates scoring in his final Leicester City appearance

Manchester United legend Ruud Van Nistelrooy has emerged as a front-runner to replace the Chelsea-bound Enzo Maresca at Leicester City.

While West Bromwich Albion boss Carlos Corberan remains the bookmakers' favourite to take over at the King Power Stadium once Maresca's exit for Stamford Bridge is confirmed, 47-year-old Van Nistelrooy has come from nowhere to listed in the latest betting.

The former PSV Eindhoven boss is currently third favourite for the Foxes job at 7/2, behind Corberan and former Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper (5/2).

Chelsea's dismissal of Mauricio Pochettino sparked the current upheaval at the King Power Stadium as the Foxes prepare for life back in the Premier League following their Championship title triumph under Maresca, a former assistant to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. It is understood the Italian has agreed a five-year contract to take over at Stamford Bridge.

Sky Bet have installed Corberan as 9/4 favourite to make the jump up from the second tier to replace Maresca. The Spaniard - who has also been rumoured in the media - has been in charge of the Baggies for two seasons, taking them to a fifth-placed finish last season before losing to Southampton in the play-off semi-finals. Prior to that he reached the final with Huddersfield Town in 2022, though fell at that hurdle also.

However, the Van Nistelrooy is intriguing. He resigned at the end of his solitary season with PSV after winning the Dutch Cup. The former Old Trafford striker also had spells running PSV’s youth sides, as well as being an assistant to Guus Hiddink with the Dutch national side.

Speaking after his PSV spell, he hinted that he would be open to managing in the. Speaking to AS, he said: "I would really like to work in Spain, and I have had conversations with Spanish clubs. But also the other leagues in which I have played, I want to coach there too. In the Premier League, and the Bundesliga."

Ex-Brighton and Chelsea coach Graham Potter has drifted to 5/1 in the latest betting. Coventry City's Mark Robins, OH Leuven's Oscar Garcia and Luton Town's Rob Edwards also feature, but a City old boy is another tantalising option.

Former Foxes midfielder Esteban Cambiasso, who helped the club achieve Premier League survival in dramatic circumstances upon their top-flight return a decade ago, has entered the race at 16/1. The Argentine retired in 2017 with his full UEFA A license in coaching, though has never held a managerial position to date.
