A number of works will be carried out as part of a project to transform a major road in Cambridge. The Milton Road scheme has been ongoing since June 2022 and looks to connect the city centre with nearby villages as well as the A10 and A14.

The project is organised by the Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP) and aims to improve public transport, cycle and walking infrastructure in the city. It also hopes to encourage greener travel options, free up the road and reduce pollution.

It is estimated that the scheme has cost in the region of £24 million in total. The works are expected to be completed by the end of the year.

In the latest update, the GCP confirmed that work on the Ascham Road Copenhagen crossing was expected to re-open this month. They added that work is also ongoing at the Birch Close and Fraser Road crossings, while the Lovell Road Copenhagen crossing remains closed.

White line and icon painting is also continuing, with both the new road and the cycleway symbols and markings underway. A combination of road, footpath and red cycle path tarmac is due to be laid as part of a future tarmacking visit planned for the end of the month.

Additional overnight works to install new traffic islands for the new roundabout at the junction with Highworth Avenue and Elizabeth Way have been taking place. The southbound bus stop opposite the Golden Hind is now open while work is expected to begin on the Copenhagen crossing at Hurst Park Avenue under three-way lights.

A vast majority of the kerb work, mainly in the southern section of Milton Road, is also complete. Tree planting and verge work is ongoing., with verges in the northern section, towards King’s Hedges are being protected to ensure successful seeding.
