The 23-year-old singer recently started his solo career after the boy band - also made up of Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne - went on a self-inflicted hiatus, but some fans are confident he is not going to be returning to the group and have put their money where their mouth is.

As a result of a flurry of bets coming in on Thursday morning for Niall to quit 1D before the end of 2017, some from his hometown of Mullingar in Ireland, BoyleSports have been forced to suspend betting on the market.

The This Town hitmaker was 11/2 to leave One Direction before the year was out at the start of the week.

Liam Glynn, BoyleSports’ spokesperson, said: “We were flooded with bets on Niall Horan to leave One Direction on Thursday morning with the biggest being a bet of €150 placed in his home town.

"Another bet of €100 was placed within an hour of the first bet along with numerous bets of tenners and twenties. Our traders smelled a rat and had no choice but to pull the plug on the market.”

Niall recently appeared on The Graham Norton Show and impressed so much the bookie is taking bets on the star landing his own chat show.

Liam added: “One way or another with Niall having launched a solo career and after impressing on The Graham Norton show, his days in One Direction may well be numbered.

"The Mullingar native is 9/2 to land his own UK or Irish chat show and this is a market we are keeping a close eye on now.”

However, during his appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Niall insisted the group would be back in the “foreseeable future”.

He said: “For now we are doing our own thing. We can’t put a date on it but it won’t be in 50 years. It’s in the foreseeable future. We’ve talked about it, but for now we’ll just play it by ear and see what happens.”
