Nick Montgomery has been given the boot by Hibs with only two matches remaining, as the crushing defeat to Aberdeen proves to be the last straw. After a mere eight months at the helm, Montgomery's tenure ended in disgrace following a 4-0 thrashing by Aberdeen.

The pressure on Montgomery had been mounting after failing to secure a top six spot in the Scottish Premiership and managing just four league victories since mid-December. This poor run of form saw the Easter Road outfit slip into the bottom six, with the club aiming to finish as the best of the rest in Scotland.

However, the drubbing at the hands of Peter Leven's squad leaves the Leith side languishing in ninth place in the standings.

In the aftermath of the loss to Aberdeen, loud jeers echoed around Easter Road, with a portion of the Hibs faithful staging a sit-in protest. This proved too much for the club to bear, especially in light of recent investment into the club's infrastructure from Bournemouth owner Bill Foley.

His Black Knights consortium has acquired a 25% stake, with the American businessman taking a seat on the board and initiating a comprehensive review of the club's performance both on and off the pitch, reports the Daily Record.

The board of the club issued a statement saying: "As a board this was not a decision we made lightly, but felt it a necessary one to move the team forward. Although Nick and his coaching team worked tirelessly, their efforts didn't deliver the results we had hoped for. I'd like to thank Nick, Sergio, and Miguel for all of their hard work and dedication, and wish them all the best for the future."

As Hibs are now on the hunt for their sixth permanent manager in a span of five years, there seems to be no halt to the rapidly revolving door at Easter Road. The club's former captain David Gray is set to take charge of the final two games of the season, starting with the Motherwell match at Easter Road on Wednesday evening.
